• you’re working without authorization
• your work experience was gained without temporary resident status in Canada

According to the Canadian National Occupational Classification skilled work experience means work experience gained in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 job categories. Your work experience can be in 1 or more of these categories.

You must show that you performed the duties set out in the lead statement of the occupational description in the NOC. This includes all the essential duties and most of the main duties listed.

EDUCATION

There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class.

If you want to improve your rank in the Express Entry pool for immigration purposes, there are 2 ways you can do this.

• If you went to school in Canada, you can get points for a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian:
  • secondary institution (high school) or
  • post-secondary institution

or

• If you have foreign education, you can get points for:
  • a completed foreign credential, and
  • an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report for immigration purposes from a designated organization showing that your education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian:
    • secondary institution (high school) or
    • post-secondary institution

LANGUAGE ABILITY

You must:

1. meet the minimum language level of:

• Canadian Language Benchmark 7 for TEER 0 or TEER 1 job or
• Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for TEER 2 or TEER 3 jobs

2. take approved language tests for:

• writing
• reading
• listening
• speaking

3. describe the test results in your Express Entry Profile

Your language tests are valid for 2 years after the date of the test result and must be valid on the day you apply for permanent residence.

ADMISSIBILITY

You must be allowed to come to Canada. Some people aren’t allowed to come to Canada. They’re “inadmissible” under Canda immigration law

A Canadian immigration officer will decide if you can enter Canada when you:

• apply for a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or
• when you arrive at a port of entry.

There are different reasons one may not be allowed into Canada, such as security, criminal or medical reasons.

WHERE TO LIVE IN CANADA

You must plan to live outside the province of Quebec. The province of Quebec selects its skilled workers if you plan on living in Quebec.

When you fill out your profile, we’ll ask you where you plan to live in Canada. You don’t have to settle in that province or territory. 

DOCUMENT REQUIREMENT FOR PROFILE

You don’t need to upload documents to submit a profile, but you may need information from some or all of these documents:

1. A passport or travel document

• Venezuelan passport holders: You may need to complete extra steps when you create a profile or fill out your application.

2. Language test results
3. Proof of Canadian education or an educational credential assessment report for immigration purposes if

• You’re applying through the Federal Skilled Workers Program, or
• You want to get points for the education you got outside of Canada

4. Provincial nomination (if you have one)
5. Written job offer from an employer in Canada (if you have one), proof of work experience, certificate of qualification in a trade occupation issued by a Canadian province or territory (if you have one)
6. Proof of funds.

Candidates in Nigeria looking to immigrate to Canada have over 80 possible pathways to Canadian immigration open to them. This is provided they qualify under one of the over 80 immigration pathways. There are currently over 42,000 Nigerians in Canada. In 2021, over 15,000 Nigerians were granted permanent residency in Canada. We will introduce some of the most popular pathways favorable to Nigerian nationals. 

FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM

This is the most popular pathway under the Canadian express entry. Candidates from Nigeria who do not wish to immigrate via the study route should consider this path. This program is open to people with professional work experience who which to immigrate to Canada with or without a Canadian job offer. To immigrate to Canada through the FSWP route, candidates must show evidence of work experience, good educational background, and language skills.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

• One year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience within the last 10 years before application. Work experience must be in a skilled occupation classified under the National Occupational Classification (NOC); skill level 0, A, or B.
• Validated language ability, 7 in English or French across all abilities (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). Must be equivalent to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).
• Score at least 67 points on IRCC’s six immigration selection factors.
• Prove that you have enough money for you or your family to settle in Canada.
• Canadian educational credential (certificate, diploma, or degree) or foreign credential and Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report.

PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM

PNP is another option for people from Nigeria looking to immigrate to Canada. Provinces and territories are accorded the opportunity to design their own immigration pathway. Most provinces decide on this based on their economic and demographic needs. Many provinces and territories in Canada offer PNP to skilled workers who wish to immigrate to Canada. Candidates will be given permanent residency in these provinces.

Provided they meet the eligibility requirements, Nigerians can apply to move to Canada through the PNP route. Those who enter the express entry pool can also be invited to apply for nomination by a province. Getting a provincial nomination means an additional  600 CRS points for the candidate. An invitation to apply for permanent residence during the express entry draw is sure for such a candidate. Nigerian nationals should consider this immigration route. BUSINESS IMMIGRATION

Nigerians with work experience as business owners or managers can apply for permanent residency through this route. Could be a federal or a provincial business immigration program. Nigerians with experience in this field qualify for both. This programs require a significant investment in the company or business you intend to start in Canada. Many PNPs require a lower investment for candidates interested in starting a business in a less populated area. Depending on the kind of regional entrepreneur programs they have. Candidates from Nigeria looking to immigrate to Canada through this route must be able to proof that they have notable experience in business. To know your eligibility, talk to a consultant. 

SPONSORSHIP

For this pathway, having a qualifying family member that is a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada. This is another easy way for citizens of Nigeria to immigrate to Canada. Canada’s plan for this year is to welcome 105,000 new permanent residents through family sponsorship programs. In Canada, there are several that gives citizens and permanent residents to bring their family over to Canada. The time for processing a sponsorship application typically depends on the sponsoring family member. For spousal sponsorship route, the applications take 12 months for processing. Nigerians can also be eligible for this pathway if they have a child, grandchild or spouse with Canadian PR or citizenship.

Canada offers study intakes in different periods. Many international students keep applying to schools in Canada because of their trusted educational system. But how do you know which intake is best for you as an international student? We have put together the different study intakes available to students (indigenous and international) aspiring to study in Canada.

Fall intake

This intake is the primary study intake in Canada for international students. During the fall season, many universities open up semesters for classes. Normally between September to December, this intake is most preferred by international students. Fall intake comes with a lot of opportunities for students to study different programs. Compared to the winter period, students who apply to study in the fall term get to understand the environment and prepare for the winter season.

Only a few institutions in Canada open for admission to this intake. Few seats are made available for courses open for this intake. To study in this period, students are expected to have applied by February. International students are to speak to an advisor before applying for this intake.
